The plane that crashed and Governor Danbaba Suntai

The Governor of Taraba State, Mr. Danbaba Suntai, survived a plane crash in neighbouring Adamawa State on Thursday, but his condition is said to be critical. Five other passengers, including the governor’s security detail for the journey, survived the crash.
While initial report said the governor died in the crash, the aviation ministry and the Taraba and Adamawa state governments said that he survived.
A statement issued by the Special Assistant to the Minister of Aviation on Media, Mr. Joe Obi, gave details of the crash and said no passenger on the aircraft died.
The statement said, “An aircraft, Cessna 208, with six souls on board including crew, operated by the Taraba State Government departed Jalingo, Taraba State for Yola this evening and reported contact with the Yola Control Tower (1720Z) and field in sight at 38 miles estimating landing at 1730Z.
The pilot subsequently lost contact with Yola Control Tower and subsequent effort to raise the aircraft failed.
“Search and Rescue was immediately activated and the site of incident located with all victims alive with various degrees of injuries. The victims have been evacuated to the hospital for treatment pending further investigation of the incident.
“This is the correct version of the incident; every other one that is contrary to this is incorrect.”

(Reuters) - Hurricane Sandy pounded the Bahamas with battering winds and rain on Friday, sweeping over the island chain after killing 21 people across the Caribbean and posing a menacing threat to the U.S. East Coast.

Forecasters warned the late-season storm is expected to combine with a polar air mass near the United States next week, potentially producing a highly unusual and potent storm that could wreak havoc along the U.S. East Coast.

Late Thursday, Sandy weakened to a Category 1 storm as it tore though sparsely populated low-lying southeastern islands in the Bahamas, knocking out power and blowing off rooftops of some homes.

Sandy's torrential rains and heavy winds were blamed for the deaths of 21 people. The Cuban government said on Thursday night that 11 people died when the storm barreled across the island, most killed by falling trees or in building collapses in Santiago de Cuba province and neighboring Guantanamo province.

Haiti's civil protection office said nine people died even though the country did not suffer a direct hit from Sandy, and one person was killed by falling rocks in Jamaica when the storm struck there on Wednesday.

Police beg family of slain girl for settlement

Lucy Ukpong
The police have pleaded with the family of Lucy Ukpong, a sales girl that was shot dead by policemen from the FCT Police Command, for an amicable settlement of the matter.

It was gathered that the parents of the deceased and other relations had met with some police officers over the killing of the girl, but the meeting was not conclusive on how the matter should be settled.
Our correspondent learnt that the family were considering settling the matter through judicial process or payment of compensation by the police.
This  revelation came just just as the family had concluded arrangements to collect Lucy’s remains from Garki Hospital on Friday (today) for burial in Akwa Ibom State on Saturday.Lucy, a sales girl at a photography shop in Apo, Abuja was hit in the chest by bullets allegedly fired by policemen from the FCT Special Anti-robbery Squad on October 12. Three others sustained gunshot wounds during the incident.
The 20-year-old girl was inside the shop when she was killed by policemen who had come to enforce the order on demolition of illegal structures by officials of development control department. The deceased had only spent a month on her job before the incident.Findings however indicated that the policemen were on an illegal duty as the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council said they were not authorised to enforce any demolition exercise during the period.
