Jenni Rivera Crash Victims' Families SUE

0110_jenni_rivera_01
Family members of the people who perished alongside Mexican singer Jenni Rivera in a gruesome plane crash last month have just filed a lawsuit -- blaming the plane's owners for negligence ... and they're also going after Jenni's company for money -- calling the plane "a bucket of bolts."

Relatives of Arturo Rivera (Jenni's publicist), Jacobo "Jacob" Yebale (her makeup artist), Jorge Armando Sanchez Vasquez (her stylist), and Mario Macias Pacheco (her lawyer) have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Starwood Management, the owner of the Learjet that was carrying Jenni and her entourage when it crashed into the mountains of Northern Mexico, killing everyone on board.

According to the lawsuit, the families claim Starwood negligently allowed the plane to take off that fateful day -- among other things, they say the 78-year-old pilot was not licensed to fly "passengers for hire."  They also say the pilot didn't have an instrument flight rule license, something that was necessary at 35,000 feet.

The family of Italian fashion boss Vittorio Missoni expressed hope Monday that he might yet be found, more than three days after his plane went missing off the coast of Venezuela.
The small plane, carrying Vittorio Missoni, his wife and four others, last made contact about 10 nautical miles from shore on Friday. Vittorio Missoni, 58, is a director of the famed Missoni fashion house, which he runs with his siblings, Luca and Angela.

"We are full of hope and confidence for the work that the authorities have done so far. We will not give up," Angela Missoni said in a statement, Italy's ANSA news agency reported.
She said her brother Luca is in Venezuela. As a pilot, he is involved in aerial searches of the area, she said."At this time, we have no further specific information regarding these efforts except to say we are confident they will continue at the same pace and that the search will explore all possible avenues," said Angela Missoni.

(Reuters) - British singer David Bowie released his first new song in nearly a decade on Tuesday in a surprise launch coinciding with his 66th birthday.

The song, available on iTunes and free to view on his re-launched website, was recorded in New York and will be followed by Bowie's first studio album since 2003, "The Next Day", due out in Australia on March 8 and the United States on March 12.
Fans welcomed the return of one of pop music's most gifted and enigmatic figures, and the hashtags #Bowie and #DavidBowie were trending on Twitter following the announcement.
Early reaction from the public was mixed, but critics were largely impressed.

(Reuters) - Venezuela will postpone the inauguration of President Hugo Chavez for a new term due to health problems, the government said on Tuesday, another sign the socialist leader's cancer may be bringing an end to his 14 years in power.
The 58-year-old former soldier who has dominated the South American OPEC nation since 1999 has not been heard from since surgery on December 11 in Cuba - his fourth operation since he was diagnosed with an undisclosed type of cancer in June 2011.
The announcement outraged opposition leaders who insist that Chavez must be sworn in before the National Assembly on January 10 as laid out in the constitution, or temporarily step aside and leave an ally in power.

No passengers or crew were injured, but both incidents brought out firefighters, and the National Transportation Safety Board on Tuesday bulked up the team investigating the fire.

Analysis: Apple bid for Samsung sales ban faces skeptical court

(Reuters) - Apple Inc faces long odds in its attempt to overturn a U.S. appeals court ruling that threatens to undermine its smartphone patent war against Samsung Electronics Co Ltd.
Apple has asked the full Federal Circuit Court of Appeals to revisit an October decision by a three-judge panel of the court, which rejected its request to impose a sales ban on Samsung's Galaxy Nexus smartphone ahead of a trial set for March 2014.
In that ruling, the Washington D.C.-based appeals court raised the bar for potentially market crippling injunctions on product sales based on narrow patents for phone features. The legal precedent puts Samsung in a much stronger position by allowing its products to remain on store shelves while it fights a global patent battle against Apple over smartphone technology.

(Reuters) - Walt Disney Co (DIS.N), which reported record earnings in November, started an internal cost cutting review several weeks ago that may include layoffs at its studio and other units, three people with knowledge of the effort told Reuters.
Disney, whose empire spans TV, film, merchandise and theme parks, is exploring cutbacks in jobs no longer needed because of improvements in technology, one of the people said.
It is also looking at redundant operations that could be eliminated after a string of major acquisitions over the past few years, said the person, who did not want to be identified because Disney has not disclosed the internal review.

Obama picks Hagel for defense, Brennan for CIA

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Monday nominated former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel as his next defense secretary and counterterrorism adviser John Brennan to head the CIA, potentially setting up at least one Senate confirmation battle and establishing a tough tone to start his second term.
Obama moved ahead with the picks despite concerns raised by senators on both sides of the aisle about them. Hagel has made controversial comments about Israel and gays while Brennan faces questions over his views as a CIA official in the Bush administration on the use of so-called enhanced interrogation techniques, widely considered torture, on terrorism suspects.

"I bought today 25 sacks for around 10,000 to 11,000 pounds (around $1,500 at the black market rate)," he says, putting the banknotes in the suitcase of another trader who is preparing to seek more supplies of gum arabic from village farmers.

(Reuters) - Australian police and defense forces searched burned-out vehicles and homes in the towns worst hit by wildfires on the island of Tasmania, where more than 40 fires still raged on Sunday.
The blazes began on Thursday on the state's thinly populated southeastern coast, amid a fierce heatwave and strong winds.
The heat eased over the weekend, slowing the fires, but late on Sunday firefighters issued an emergency warning for residents in Taranna, 47 km (29 miles) east of the state capital Hobart, where a fire burning for more than three days threatened residents.

Obama to name former Senator Hagel for defense secretary: Democratic aide

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama will nominate former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel to be his defense secretary, and an announcement could come on Monday, a congressional Democratic aide said on Sunday.
The choice will likely set up a confirmation battle in the Senate over whether the former Nebraska senator strongly supports key U.S. allyIsrael. Hagel also has been criticized for comments he made questioning the effectiveness of sanctions on Iran for its nuclear program.
This fight would come after the Obama administration backed down from a tough Senate confirmation battle over Susan Rice, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations who was Obama's first pick to replace Hillary Clinton as secretary of state. Rice withdrew her name from consideration after drawing heavy fire from Republicans for remarks she made in the aftermath of a September 11 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya.

Four dead in townhouse shooting in Aurora, Colorado

Police survey the outside of a townhouse complex following an overnight hostage-taking incident in Aurora, Colorado January 5, 2013. Four people died including the gunman according to police reports after several hours of failed police negotiations after the gunman barricaded himself at the home with hostages in in the same town where a man shot dead 12 people and wounded 58 more at a movie theatre last July. REUTERS-Evan Semon

(Reuters) - A gunman who barricaded himself inside a townhouse after killing three people in the home was shot to death by police on Saturday in Aurora, Colorado, the same Denver suburb where 12 people were slain in a movie house massacre last July, police said.
The gunman and his three victims, as well as a woman who fled safely from the home at the outset of the violence and alerted authorities, were all believed to be related to one another, police spokeswoman Cassidee Carlson said.
But the motive for the killings was not immediately understood. "We're trying to find out what set this guy off," she told Reuters.
